Electric car MOTs and servicing: what's actually different
EVs skip the emissions test, not the MOT — here's how testing and servicing differ, and how to find a garage genuinely qualified to work on one.
Yes, electric cars need an MOT
The rules are identical to any other car: first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, then every year. Same booking process, same legal consequences if it lapses, and the same maximum fee — the cap for a car (£54.85) applies regardless of what powers it.

The one persistent myth worth killing: there is no MOT exemption for electric cars. A narrow exemption exists for electric goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2015 — early electric vans, essentially — but passenger EVs have always been tested normally. How an EV MOT differs from a petrol or diesel one
It is the standard MOT with the combustion-specific parts removed:

Because the emissions stage disappears, the test can be slightly quicker, but the pass standard on everything else is exactly the same.
What EVs actually fail on
- Tyres. EVs are heavy and deliver instant torque, so tyres can wear faster than owners expect. Check tread depth against the 1.6mm legal limit before the test.
- Brake discs. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes are used less — pads last ages, but discs can corrode from disuse, and corroded or pitted discs can fail.

How EV servicing differs
An EV drivetrain has far fewer moving parts than an engine — no oil changes, spark plugs, timing belt, clutch or exhaust. But "less servicing" is not "no servicing". A typical EV schedule covers:
- Tyres and tracking — the biggest consumable cost on most EVs;
- Brake fluid changes and brake maintenance — including cleaning up lightly-used discs and calipers;
- Coolant for the battery and power electronics — many EVs have liquid thermal management that needs periodic attention;
- Cabin/pollen filters, wipers, washers, 12-volt battery — the ordinary stuff still exists;
- Suspension checks — vehicle weight works suspension components hard;
- Software updates and battery health checks — increasingly part of a routine service, and a battery health report adds real value when you sell.
Over several years, most owners find servicing costs lower than an equivalent petrol car — fewer parts, fewer fluids, less brake wear — provided the garage knows EVs well enough to price the work sensibly rather than defensively.
Why the garage you choose matters more with an EV
EV drive systems run at several hundred volts — enough to be lethal. Safe work on or near high-voltage components requires specific training and certification (the IMI's TechSafe standards, typically IMI Levels 2–4, are the recognised UK route), insulated tooling, and procedures for isolating the battery before work starts.
The industry is still catching up: figures from the Institute of the Motor Industry show that only a minority of UK technicians — around a quarter to a third, on recent IMI counts — hold an EV qualification, and the IMI has warned that training is not keeping pace with the number of EVs on the road. In practice, plenty of garages will happily MOT an EV (the test itself needs no high-voltage intervention) but cannot safely repair or service one.
Questions worth asking before you book:
- Do you have technicians with IMI TechSafe / EV Level 2 or above?
- Have you worked on this make and model before?
- Can you do a battery health check?
- Are diagnostics for my brand's software supported?

Is high-voltage work safe at an independent garage?
Yes — when the training is real. EV-qualified independents work to the same safety standards as franchised dealers: isolating the high-voltage system before work, using insulated tools and appropriate PPE, and keeping untrained staff away from live components. Qualification is the whole game; an EV-trained independent is a perfectly good choice and usually cheaper than a main dealer. An unqualified one is a risk to their staff and your car — high-voltage batteries do not forgive improvisation.
For routine items that never touch the high-voltage system — tyres, wipers, suspension, the MOT itself — any competent garage is fine.
